Bill c-37: 16 and 17 yr olds charged with murder, manslaughter, or aggravated sexual assault would go to adult court. 1st degree: 10 yr max, 6 yr max to be served incarcerated. 2nd degree: 7 yr max, 4 yr incarcerated max. Youth crime rates decreasing: probation common sentence given to youth (usually 1 yr) Assessment of young offenders: assessing those under 12. Child not legally able to provide consent (must ask guardian) Internalizing problems: emotional difficulties such as anxiety, depression, and obsessions experienced by youth. Externalizing problems: behavioural difficulties such as delinquency, fighting, bullying lying, or destructive behaviour experienced by youth. Stable, symptoms peak in teenage years and decrease in late 20s. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: persistent pattern of inattention and hyperactivity or impulsivity. Oppositional defiant disorder: persistent pattern of negativistic, hostile, and defiant behaviours (lasts more than 6 months)
