Document Summary

Chapter 12: the cell cycle. Tuesday, december 9, 2014. Cell division: the production of cells. Cell cycle: ordered sequence of events in the life of a cell, from its origin till its division. >> eukaryotic cells are composed of interphase (g1, s, g2) & m (mitosis & cytokinesis). Chromosome: cellular structure carrying genetic material. >> consists of one very long dna molecule & associated proteins. Chromatin: complex of dna & proteins that make up eukaryotic chromosomes. >> when cell is not dividing, exists in dispersed form (not visible w/ a light microscope) Somatic cells: body cells. Gametes: in sperm & egg cells (23 chromosomes). Distribution of chromosomes during eukaryotic cell division. Centromere: region of chromosome where sister chromatids where they are most likely attached. Mitosis: division of the genetic material in a cell. Cytokinesis: follows mitosis, division of cytoplasm. The mitotic phase alternates with interphase in the cell cycle.
