Chapter 3: body and mind: growth in infancy. Pruning: process by which unused connections in the brain die (bene cial) Experience-expectant: brain functions that require basic common experiences. Experience-dependent: brain functions that depend on variable experiences. Sensation: when a sensory system detects a stimulus (ie. light) Perception: when the brain processes a sensation (need experience and motivation) Ie. hearing is mature at birth, seeing is immature, taste/smell is mature, touch is acute. Depth perception is present by 3 months, understanding depth takes experience. Motor skills: learned abilities to move some part of the body. Breathing re ex: maintain oxygen supply (hiccups, sneezes, thrashing when covered) Babinski re ex: toes fan upwards when newborns feet are stroked. Stepping re ex: move feet as if to walk when held. Palmar grasping re ex: grip tightly when something touches palms. Gross motor skills: physical abilities involving large body movements (ie. walking, jumping)
