What is social psychology and research in social psychology. Week 2 readings: article 1: how to be a wise consumer of psychological research. It is important to read the details of the study (vs. the title or the news story) to determine the reported ndings. To be an intelligent consumer of research results we routinely encounter, some understanding of issues pertaining to research studies is important. Claims require evidence (tested hypothesis, accept/reject), understanding the nature and purpose of methods is key to testing. Typically, the best studies employ random sampling to generalize data to the population. Important to pay attention to who was sampled, make sure those who were sampled are the same kind of people a researcher is making a generalized claim about (college vs. adults, cad vs. usa) Descriptive research: random sampling is very important, experimental research: random assignment. Sample: people sampled in a study re ect those not sampled.
