The self: the self can be de ned in different ways, existential self ( i ) Subjective aspect of existence including personal identity, personal agency (sense of being able to do things)and continued existence across time subjective experience of the world: categorical self ( me ) The self is viewed as a product of a system of interrelated processes. Children"s opinion of their abilities, they get messages from the world, evaluating their looks and behaviour/actions. Self-control, once kids start to control their emotions, can tie into idea of themselves. Selman"s 5 stages of self-awareness begins with the infant"s inability to differentiate the physical and psychological selves and ends with the adolescent"s belief that aspects of the self remain unconscious and unknowable. The infant"s awareness of only the physical self gradually develops into greater understanding of different features of the self. Kids will understand themselves as they become more aware of themselves; not just about their physical abilities and features.
