Stress = the process by which we perceive and respond to certain events, called stressors, that we appraise as threatening or challenging: arises less from the event than from how we appraise them, ex. Creaking sounds one person ignores (no stress), another gets paranoid and suspects intruder (alarmed) When short-lived, or perceived as challenges, stressors can have pos efects: momentary stress: mobilize immune sys for fending of infecions, arouses/moivates us to conquer problems. Some stress early in life = conducive to later emoional resilience: adversity can beget growth. Extreme/prolonged stress can harm us (ex. troops who sufered from post-traumaic stress elevated circ/digesive/resp/infecious disease) 3 types: catastrophes, signiicant life changes, daily hassles. Catastrophes: unpredictable large-scale events (ex. wars, earthquakes, famines, nearly always appraised as threatening, stress = twofold for people who respond by relocaing to another country. Family separaion + challenges of adjusing to a new culture.
