Document Summary
Transport system pump; hollow blood vessels are the delivery routes. Right side of the heart: receives oxygen-poor blood from the body tissues and then pumps to the lungs to pick up oxygen and dispel carbon dioxide. (pulmonary circuit: blood vessels that carry blood to and from the lungs) Two receiving chambers: right atrium and left atrium. Two main pumping chambers: right ventricle and left ventricle. Enclosed in the mediastinum of thorax (extends obliquely for 12-14cm from the second rib to the fifth intercostal space; 2/3 of its mass is on the left side; the right side lies on the diaphragm) Its broad, flat base is directed toward the right shoulder, its apex points towards the hip. Composed mainly of cardiac muscle (the bulk of the heart) it contracts. White sheet of endothelium (squamous epithelium) resting on thin ct layer. Continuous with endothelial linings of blood vessels leaving and entering the heart.
