ANP 1105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Extracellular Fluid, Angina Pectoris, Cell Membrane
Document Summary
The heart is essentially 2 pumps situated right next to each other. Right side: receives oxygen-poor blood from the tissues and pumps it to the lungs where they receive more oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide. The blood vessels that carry blood to and from the lungs is called the pulmonary circuit. Left side: receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and distributes it throughout the body to supply oxygen and nutrients. The blood vessels that transport oxygen to and from the body tissues is called the systemic circuit. The two receiving chambers are the right and left atrium. The two pumping chambers are the right and left ventricle. The heart is the size of a fist, and weighs about 250-350 grams. Located within the mediastinum of the thoracic cavity. It extends obliquely for 12-14cm, from the second rib to the fifth intercostal space.
