Hofstede explains the implications of the shared aspect of culture well when he described culture as mental programming that lies between universal human nature on one side, and unique personalities on the other. Individuals carry in their mind three levels of programming about how they interact with their environment. Culture = shared by members of a group, occurs at an intermediate level based on shared expectations/experiences within a society. A set of knowledge structures consisting of systems of values, norms, attitudes, beliefs, and behavioral meanings. Shared by members of a social group (society) & embedded in its institutions. Shared in this case means that most members intuitively understand the basic values, norms, or logics that underlie what is acceptable in a society. Learned from interacting with the social environment (previous generation)
