Describing culture: what it is and where it comes from. Culture broadly influences how international managers (1) see their world, (2) what they do, and (3) what others expect of them. Definitions of culture have implications for understanding the relationship between cultural issues and global management. The definition of culture used in the text includes: culture is shared by members of a particular group; hofstede"s mental programming between universal human nature and unique personalities. Bottom = basic universal, biological; human nature. Middle = specific to groups and learned; culture. Culture is more directly about behavioral meanings and societal norms and indirectly about patterns of behavior or personal values; holding a narrow perspective & not recognizing any cultural differences exist is engaging in parochialism. Why cultures differ and persist: assumptions about a society"s interactions with the environment: Limited number of alternatives for dealing with these problems.
