SOCI 217 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Grounded Theory, Jaywalking, Amen
Document Summary
Qualitative analysis: the non-numerical examination and interpretation of observations, for the purpose of discovering underlying meanings and patterns of relationships. How you determine what"s important to observe. How you formulate your analytical conclusions on the basis of those observations. Goal is to generalize and nd patterns and themes through coding and memoing. Similarities researchers seek are those patterns of interactions and events that are generally common to what they"re studying. Ex: in studying jaywalking, you might look for similar patterns - that jaywalkers check for police of cers before darting across the street. Researcher is attuned to the discovery of commonalities. When you rst notice a commonality, you become more deliberate in observing whether it"s occurring or not. Researcher is also constantly alert to differences. Ex: when a few participants in a religious meeting murmur, amen, you might notice that a few don"t -> then ask the question why do they deviate from the norm? etc.
