PSYC 217 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Inter-Rater Reliability, Concurrent Validity, Convergent Validity
Document Summary
You have to operational definitions are the specific methods used to manipulate or measure the variable. Another key component of this chapter is acknowledging that some operation definitions are of higher quality than others. In this chapter, the self-(cid:396)epo(cid:396)t (cid:373)easu(cid:396)es a(cid:396)e (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:373)o(cid:374)ly (cid:396)efe(cid:396)(cid:396)ed to as (cid:862)s(cid:272)ales(cid:863). These s(cid:272)ales a(cid:396)e used to measure various psychological attributes such as intelligence, extraversion, depression, self-esteem and they also measure abilities, attributes, and potential. That is, they tell us basic personality traits. In the area of personal psychology it"s (cid:449)ise(cid:396) to use p(cid:396)e-existing measure as they have better reliability and validity. Once you understand what validity and reliability is composed of, you can evaluate the quality of measures and the operational definitions that you create. Measures need to have reliability (the degree to which a measure is consistent. ) That is, they produce the same/similar results each time you test the participant. If there is fluctuation to the measure, then the measure is unreliable.
