Document Summary

Topic 4. 3 - the golgi and protein processing. After translation on ribosomes in the cytosolic compartment all proteins are processed either in the cytosol or in the endomembrane system. The initial stages of protein processing involving folding of the protein into its 3d structure in the er. Remember that folding of proteins takes place through interaction with chaperone proteins (refer to your notes from this unit and unit 2 if you need a refresher). Proteins that are not properly folded are destroyed in the proteasome. In this unit, we will first discuss the structure of the golgi, and then we will discuss golgi function. Remember that proteins contained in the cisternae of the er are separated from the cytosol by a membrane. If these proteins are to be moved, they must be moved as part of membrane vesicles, and any enzymes that act on the proteins must be contained in the vesicles or cisternae that contain the proteins.
