Document Summary
Catalysts are substances that increase the rate of chemical rxns w/o being consumed. Enzymes reduce the activation energy (ea) of a chemical rxn. As chemical rxn proceeds, existing chemical bonds break and form new ones. Transition state: the intermediate stage between reactants and products. Enzyme changes the path of the rxn but not the starting/ending pt. Enzymes form a complex w/ reactants and products. In the presence of an enzyme, the substrate first forms a complex w/ the enzyme = enzyme-substrate/es. While still part of the complex, substrate is converted to product = enzyme-product/ ep. Enzymes folded into 3d shapes bring particular amino acids into close proximity to form an active site. The active site is the portion of the enzyme that binds substrate and catalyzes its conversion to the product. Enzyme and substrate form covalent bonds and/or weak non- covalent interactions.
