Dividing organizational culture into 3 levels: assumptions, values and symbols provides important insights into how culture operates. Assumptions are unstated beliefs about: human relationship, human nature, truth, the environment, and universalism/particularism. Values frequently recognized and acknowledged by members, values reflect what organization feels it ought to do. Symbols or symbolic creations (artifacts) make up top level of organization culture: language, stories/myths, rites and rituals, metaphors, buildings, products. Good way to determine how organization views itself is by listening to language: word choices reflect and reinforce working relationships and values. Organization stores carry multiple messages and reflect important values, inspire, describe what members should do. Rites of passage: events mark important changes in roles and statuses. Rites of degradation: used to lower status of organizational members (coach) Rites of enhancement: raise standing of organizational members (medals) Rites of renewal: strengthen current system, serve status quo. Rites of conflict reduction: collective bargaining, task forces and committees to resolve conflicts.
