Chapter 9 - the nature of qualitative research. Qualitative research usually follows the inductive approach. Seeks to understand the social world through other peoples interpretations of it. Social life is cause by interactions and negotiations between parties. Tries to minimize the disturbance caused by research to the participants social lives. The main steps of qualitative research: general research question. Narrow is actually probably better because it gives a clearer focus: selecting the relevant sites and subjects, collection of data. Using one of the types of qualitative research listed above: interpretation of data, conceptual and theoretical work. Working inductively means you generate the theory from the data. Based on the data you collect in your qualitative study, a subsequent theory should apply. 5b. collect further data: write up ndings and conclusions. Theory emerges from the collection of data. Grounded theory - stresses the importance of using data to develop theoretical ideas. Switching between testing a theory and re ning a theory.
