Document Summary
Research design - a broad structure that guides the collection and analysis of data. Quantitative data yields results that are explained as cause and effect (laws and principles) Nomothetic research - relies on cause and effect data/results. Qualitative research aims to describe the people being studied and the feelings, instead of producing generalizations. Cause and effects phenomenon only has to relate to the group being studied. Idiographic explanations - tell a story and develops empathy about the people being studied. Three criteria: correlation - the cause and effect have to vary each other. 2: non-spuriousness - alternative explanations for the correlation have to be ruled out time - the cause must come before the effect. If you repeated the study with other subjects, results should be consistent. Others must be able to repeat the experiment and get the same results. Used to also make sure the methods of the study were carried out properly.
