Document Summary

All processes studied by geologists are in some way dependent on the properties of mienrals. Minerals naturally occurring inorganic solids that posess an ordered internal structure and definite chemical composition. Must posses an orderly internal structure (atomic pattern) Definite chemical composition that can vary within limits. Rocks solid mass of mineral or mineral-like materual. Can be aggregates: intergrown minerals which individually still retain their properties. Some rocks are non-material matter: obsidian, pumice, coal. Every samle of the same mineral contains the same elements joined together in a consistent, repeating pattern. Most are a combination of two more more elements joined to form a stable, neutral compound. Minerals are usualy compounds that form from bonds. Ionic bonding electron transfer from oppositely charged ions: arranged to minimize repulsion from like charges. Therefore, there is an orderly arrangement fo oppositely charged ions. Most minerals are chemical compounds, and the compounds/ ions are very different from the element.
