Document Summary

Provide a selecively permeable barrier: prevent unrestricted exchange of molecules. Transport solutes: exchange of molecules across the membrane. Do not have to know structure of 4 phospholipids. All membrane lipids are amphipathic: faty tails have to point inside, polar heads are oriented to water on both sides. Figure 11-15: membrane components move all the ime, moving within bilayer, flipping between layers. Self assembles to put faty ends away from water. When membrane gels, cells are not alive. Cells can alter degree of saturaion of faty acids: fully saturated gives a straight faty acid tail. Cells can alter cholesterol content: in warm condiions (warm blooded), more cholesterol. Cold water versus warm water ish species: tries harder to maintain luidity in cold water. Pond ish- temperature change: alters faty acid tails daily (day and night) Hibernaing animals: drop temperature, adjust membrane composiion. Winter wheat: needs to adjust membrane liquid. Extremophiles: endangered to completely liquefying, very hot.
