Family: any social unit, or set of social relations, that does what families are popularly imagined to do. Nuclear family: a group consisting of a mother, father, and their children living in the same place. Extended family: multiple generations of relatives living together, or several adult siblings with their spouses and children who share a house and resources. Census family: a household that includes two spouses, opposite or same sex, that are either married or cohabiting with or without never-married children, or a single parent with one or more never-married children. Most families share these few features: dependency family relations tend to include long term commitments, both to each other and to the family as a social unit. Intimacy family members ideally have a deep understanding of, and familiarity with one another. Ways of looking at families and age groups: Provides a sense of continuity, helps people preserve a positive self-concept, and contributes to greater life satisfaction.
