PSYC 1200 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Axon Hillock, Axon Terminal, Human Genome Project
Document Summary
Nature and nurture both interact to produce behaviour. Genetics has a general influence on physical behaviours and features; it also influences behaviours in a similar yet not as encompassing manner. Genes are the basic units of heredity; genes are responsible for guiding the process of creating the proteins that make up our physical structures and regulate development and physiological processes throughout the lifespan. Genes are composed of protein segments called dna (deoxyribonucleic acid) which is a molecule formed in a double-helix shape that contains four nucleotides: adenine, cytosine, guanine and thymine. Each gene is a unique combination of these four nucleotides. The sequence of these four nucleotides as they appear on a certain gene is known as one"s genotype which is the genetic makeup of an organism the unique set of genes that comprise that individual"s genetic code. This represents the code used to create proteins.
