PSYC 2330 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Habituation, Aplysia Gill And Siphon Withdrawal Reflex, Aplysia
Document Summary
Aplysia: is a snail like organism who leaves its lips and the pouch slightly open to let in water. This is the expelled by a spout known as the siphon. If the siphon is touched, this section and the gill with reflex inward to withdraw from the pouch so the pouch can close for protection. If a stimulus is repeated the withdrawal becomes slower and less incomplete. If very continuous, the siphon may stop withdrawing overall. The aplysia has both direct and indirect synaptic paths from the sensory neurons to those of the gill motor neurons. In a state of not being used too it, each ap creates a strong epsp in the motor neurons/interneurons. Here, through the connections the burst of ap create a high frequency discharge creating a rapid complete withdrawal of the gill with the help of the motor neurons.
