Don giovanni is based on the famous story of don juan, the insatiable lover who chases women, seduces them to add them to his collection, treating them as objects. The story contains the ingredients for high drama and low force. The city of prague, now the capital of the czech republic, was second to importance to vienna in the austro-hungarian empire. It was the capital of bohemia ruled by the emperor joseph ii of austria. Although the main language was spoken in shops and homes, german was the language for business and cultural affairs. The cities architecture was largely imported as well: the church of st. nicholas on old town. Although prague wasn"t in the same musical league as vienna, it still had a rich life. There was a great local"s love for music. Music seemed to be everywhere, despite the frequency, it did not have a theatre for the general public until 1783.
