Genes and gender: about two-thirds of the variation in age of puberty is genetic, evident not only in families but also in ethnic groups, genes on the sex chromosome have a marked effect. Leptin levels increase during childhood and peak at around age 12. Boys: for the past few decades, early-maturing boys have been more aggressive, law-breaking, and alcohol-abusing than later-maturing boys, as a result, they have more trouble with parents, schools, and the police.
