Composed of epithelium resting on a loose connective tissue membrane called the lamina propria. Lines all body cavities that open to exterior. Composed of simple squamous epithelium resting on a thin layer of areolar connective tissue. Line body cavities that are closed to the exterior. Serous layers are separated by serous fluid (secreted by both membranes) Synovial membranes are composed of soft areolar connective tissue. Line fibrous capsules surrounding joints and provide a smooth surface and secrete fluid. Also line small sacs called bursae and tendon sheaths. Keeps water and important molecules in and out. It insulates and cushions, chemical damage, thermal damage and bacteria. Skin acts as a mini-excretory system; urea, salts and water are lost when we sweat. Manufactures several proteins important to immunity and makes vitamin. There are cutaneous sensory receptors (part of nervous system) in the skin. Epidermis made up of stratified squamous epithelium and is capable of keratinizing (becoming tough)
