Anatomy of the heart: size, location and orientation. Size of a person"s fist, hollow, cone-shaped and weighs less than a pound. Mediastinum: encloses the heart, it is the medial section of the thoracic cavity. Apex: pointed area of the heart directed toward the left hip and rests on the diaphragm. Base: broad posterosuperior base from which the great vessels of the body emerge pointing toward the right shoulder and lies beneath the second rib: coverings and walls of the heart. Problems: pericarditis-inflammation of the pericardium results in a decrease in serous fluid causing the pericardial layers to bind and stick to each other forming painful adhesions that interfere with heart movements. Walls composed of 3 layers: epicardium, myocardium and endocardium. Endocardium: thin, glistening sheet of endothelium that lines the heart chambers: continuous with the linings of the blood vessels leaving and entering the, chambers and associated great vessels heart. Consists of 4 hollow chambers/cavities, 2 atria and 2 ventricles.
