GLGY 209 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: San Andreas Fault, Moment Magnitude Scale, Seismology
Document Summary
A sudden slip on a fault (when one rock slips past another) occurs on an already exising fault. A sudden change in the arrangement of atoms occurs within a rock mineral. However, fauling is the most common and signiicant. The place where the earthquake irst occurs is called the hypocenter or focus of the earthquake. This is diferent from the epicenter, which is the point on the surface of the earth that lies directly above the focus. Someimes its hard to ind faults, because slipping and moving has broken down rock or sediment. In some cases, you can ind a fault based of of two markers, where two previously placed objects have now moved. The distance between those two markers is measured along the surface of the fault. Many faults, however are completely underground and are visible only when erosion exposes rock siing on top of it. Some faults intersect, and ofset the leveling of the ground.
