Document Summary

Sudden change is arrangement of atoms in the mineral rocks. Hypocenter: place within the earth where rock rupture and slips occurs. Epicenter: point on the surface of the earth directly above hypocenter. Normal fault: hanging wall slips down the slope of the fault. Response to stretching or extensions of the crust , this creates a more shallowly sloping. Reverse: hanging wall slips up the slop of the fault. Strike-slip fault vertical planes on which slip occurs parallel to an imaginary horizon line called the strike line on the fault plane. Displacement: the amount of skip on the fault. The step caused by normal or reverse fault is called a fault scarp. Friction is what stop the fault from continuing to slip, when stress builds again the grip gives in a it slips again. Earthquake happen because stresses build up causing rock to bend elastically until it breaks and slip of the fault occurs.
