Mirror neurons are activated when we do the action and when we watch another do the action. Can encourage behavior or discourage, depending on consequences. Downside: media covering celebrity suicide increases suicide rates and car accidents. Chameleon effect: tendency to mimic unconsciously the nonverbal mannerisms of someone who youre interacting with. Can apply to behaviors and attitudes (if motivated to get along with the person) Salience plays important role in enhacing influence of norms. Injuctive norms: beliefs about which behaviors are generally approved/disapproved by ones culture. Descriptive norms: beliefs about what most people typically do. Norms can converge or diverge (think that others should not litter but most do) Dont make salient that idea that many or most people do the bad thing (ie wood example) Ideas, feelings, and behaviors seem to spread among people like wildfire o. People in crowds behave almost as if they have one mind)
