Language - a key as it is used to transfer mental representations , internal, cognitive symbols that represent our external reality. Development of language was a major milestone in human evolution. 1: unique - animals are unable to speak like we do, acquisition is natural - children learn language without any formal lesson, conveys meaning - main reason we know what other people can be thinking. Language - is a system of symbols and rules that can be used to generate an infinite number of possible messages and meanings. Surface structure - consists of the symbols that are used and their order (e. g. i am a great softball player vs. Deep structure - underlying meaning of combined symbols. Language acquisition support system (lass: parents use high pitch tones (child directed speech) to talk to infants, name objects and ask questions. Operant conditioning - positive reinforcement of appropriate language and nonreinforcement/correction of inappropriate language.
