NU FS356 Chapter Notes - Chapter Article for Chapter 16: Menarche, Thelarche, Pubic Hair
Document Summary
A big part of puberty is sexual maturation. The stages of puberty are measured by breast and pubic hair growth for females and genitalia and pubic hair growth for males. The stages of development are consistent between males and females however, the duration and timing are different. Since, everyone enters puberty at slightly different times we base the nutritional need on the stage of development rather than age. Stage 1- prepubertal breasts and no pubic hair growth. Stage 2- small, raised breast bud and sparse pubic hair growth. Stage 3 raising of breast areola and increased amount of coarsening and curling in pubic hair growth. Stage 4 projection of areola and nipple with adult type pubic hair growth with less spread. Stage 5 mature adult contour and adult type and quantity pubic hair growth. Sexual maturation starts earlier for girls but it lasts longer.
