Malnutrition: an imbalance (both excess or deficiency) of energy, protein or other nutrients that causes measurable adverse effects on tissue, body form and function. Undernutrition: a state of deficient energy or protein intake, or absorption. Under nutrition may be due to lack of food supply or intake as well as disease or deliberate fasting. It is characterized by weight loss, changes in body composition as well as changes in organ function. This has a low rate of prevalence in the elderly people living in the community but the risk is much higher for those living in homes. This could be due to not eating what is provided, (cid:271)eing really old or si(cid:272)k and the fa(cid:272)t that we aren"t (cid:1005)(cid:1004)(cid:1004)% sure what their optimal diet is. Malnutrition effects those people who have physical impairments such as trouble swallowing or chewing, living alone and are over 80.
