Child/parent abuse, sibling violence and peer abuse are some of the more common types of maltreatment. 2001: family violence was of all violent crimes reported to police in canada. Not everyone in society is equally vulnerable: depends on social class inequalities, race/ethnicity, gender and age. Family violence and partner abuse has become more visible. Few incidents of dating violence are reported to police even though about 20% of female students are assaulted (in a broad sense) each year. Both men and women are capable of inflicting harm, but women sustain most of the injuries. Verbal abuse might be increasing (salient in music videos, generally directed towards women. Garbarino: there is a lack of civility, leading to a toxic environment in which people raise children. Renzetti: in same-sex couples, psychological abuse is directed at a partner"s vulnerabilities. Verbal abuse can commonly focus on facial features, body shape, clumsiness, lack of mental agility, unemployment, financial difficulties.
