Schools are the second most frequently mentioned source of past misery (peers is first) Schools not usually referred to as a key source of happiness. Religion plays a dominant part in lives of only a small minority of students. Schools first existed 2,000 years ago in ancient greece and rome. China and japan later introduced schools as well, but only to selective group of students. 1840 1890: western europe, north america, australia made primary school attendance mandatory. Beginning of the 20th century: mass schooling spread to all social classes equally. 1828: first infant school opened in canada (in montreal) 1858: first daycare opened in canada (also in montreal) First childcare facility opened for english canada in 1857 (toronto) Most children start school earlier than they did 30 years ago. Most children attend kindergarten at age 4, and most children attend pre-school.
