SOCI 2700H Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Twin, Birth Order, Symbolic Interactionism
Document Summary
The birth of the second child always transforms the older child"s life forever, whether they realize it or not. As the number of children increase, parents spend more time interacting with their children altogether but less individually. Family economic resources decline with each new child. A second or subsequent baby means that the parents are less likely to divorce. Child"s reaction to the baby"s arrival depends on their personality and by the steps the parents take to reassure and involve them in the process. Small children who are intense and less adaptable tend to react negatively. Infant"s schedule is different than the older child during the first months, especially if the older child goes to school. If 4+ years apart, parent"s relationship with first born can remain exclusive during part of the day when the baby sleeps: avoids competition and may make the transition to having a sibling easier.
