Document Summary

It is not a single moleculaer entity, but rather a group of. However only 3 of those families metabolize drugs. Keep in mind that these families are composed of multiple forms. Kidneys are the major organs for drug excretion (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t e(cid:454)(cid:272)(cid:396)ete fast e(cid:374)ough lipid solu(cid:271)le drugs. Which is why for some drugs that are really lipid soluble it might take years before complete excretion: drug inactivation: drug metabolism can convert pharmacologically active compounds to inactive forms. Increased therapeutic action: metabolism can increase the effectiveness of some drugs. For example codeine into morphine which is a greters analgesic: activation of prodrugs: a prodrug is a compound that is pharmacologically inactive as administered and then undergoes conversion to its active form via metabolism. Increased or decreased toxicity: by converting deugs into inactive forms, metabolism can decrese toxicity. Conversely, metabolism can increase the potential for harm by conver special considerations in drug metabolism: age: the drug-metabolizing capacity of infants is limited.
