CRIM 402 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Risk Aversion, Cortisol, Miscarriage
Document Summary
Air pollution - considered to be largest source of environmentally caused neurological inflammation. Nanoparticles have been shown to enter brain, causing neurological damage & degeneration. Rational choice theory - argues offender weighs costs, benefits, risk before making rational choice to commit crime. W/i rational choice framework, choices may not relate to perceived risk but rather that rise in crime rate may be caused by changes in offender"s perceived gain vs perceived punishment. Change could be either rise in benefit perception or drop in cost perception. Exposure to pollution can increase secretion of stress hormones, including cortisol. Increases in cortisol may increase indiv"s desire for small, immediate rewards rather than larger, postponed rewards. Increase pollution may increase aggression via increased physical distress. Could mean lowered serotonin due to pollution may make some indivs more likely to be aggressive & others more likely to be victimized due to reduced risk aversion.
