Complications at birth can cause myriad injuries, from physical defects to direct brain damage. Probably that birth or perinatal complications can cause problems in later life, including criminal & violent behaviour. 3 types of complications linked to schizophrenia. Delays/difficulties in birth can easily result in hypoxia if not corrected rapidly. Prefrontal cortex - involved in inhibitory control, so damage will impact behaviour control. Indivs w/ personality disorder in sweden identified through national registry of psychiatric evaluations & compared w/ 2 control groups. Main issues clearly linked w/ being diagnosed w/ personality disorder in adulthood - low birth weight & boeing born prematurely. Still difficult to determine whether personality disorder directly related to birth complications, as it is possible mothers also suffered from personality disorder. Extremely preterm births have shown higher risks of neurodevelopmental problems, which cause sequelae throughout life course. Many studies found links b/w antisocial behaviour & birth complications. Another factor included - env in which child grows up.
