Lombroso one of rst criminological scholars to link alcohol consumption and crime. 1970s gave birth to medical/disease model of addictions: discovery of the role of dopamine in drug addictions. De nitions: dictionary de nition of drug: substance that impacts the body in a physiological sense once ingested, drug categories legal drugs alcohol, tobacco, caffein, inhalants (glue, fuel, paints, prescription drugs, anabolic steroids, pain killers, stimulants, tranquilizers/ barbiturates. Illegal drugs (grown) cocaine and crack, magic mushrooms, heroin (opioids), marijuana, hash. Illegal drugs (synthetic: meth, ecstasy,a cid, ghb, pcp, ketamine, bath salts, spice. 10-15% of adults and 20-30% of young adults use marijuana recreationally: addiction, substance abuse, alcoholism, etc- commonality= ingestion of substance causes harm to individual and others around them. 2% of population reports use of drugs other than cannabis- 63% of incarcerated population. They tend to work shortterm but often become the source of the problem eventually.
