Document Summary

Self-concept: refers to the beliefs a person holds about his or her own attributes and how her or she evaluates these qualities. Self-esteem: refers to the positivity of your attitude toward yourself. Ideal self: is a person"s conception of how he or she would like to be. Actual self: is our more realistic appraisal of the qualities we do and don"t have. We choose some products because we think they are consistent with the actual self while we buy others to help us reach an ideal standard. Impression management: where we work hard to manage what others think of us. Symbolic interactionism: relationships with other people play a large part in forming the self. Our possessions help us evaluate ourselves and decide who we are. The looking glass self: reflexive evaluation occurs when people attempt to define themselves, by imagining others reactions to us. Self-fulfilling prophecy: when we act the way we assume others expect us to act.
