Refers to the disease of the heart & blood vessels. Blood is carried away from the heat through arteries then arterioles then capillaries where oxygen & nutrients are exchanged between cell & blood vessel. Blood the travels back to the heart from capillaries venules veins. Coronary arteries: arteries that supply blood to the heart. Atherosclerosis: narrowing of arteries caused by deposits of fat & other material in blood vessel: starts out first with a lesion (tear in the vessel) in the blood vessel, material can get stuck in the tear. Blood can"t deliver as much oxygen causing chest pains. As sometimes clot may form closing the vessel off, if this happens in the heart = heart attack, if in the brain = stroke. Prevalence: # of people with a disease/condition as a portion of the total population. Heart disease (16% hospitalization) & stroke (1/3 deaths) 2/3 leading causes of death in. Prevalence is increasing b/c we can detect it better.
