Document Summary

Cardiovascular disease: diseases of the heart (cardio) and blood (vascular) Arteries and arterioles carry blood to your organs, where oxygen and other nutrients diffuse through the capillaries. Blood returns to the heart via the venules and veins. The arteries that provide blood to the heart itself are called the coronary arteries. Atherosclerosis: a progressive narrowing of the arteries caused by deposits of fat and other material. Starts with a lesion to the inner wall of the artery which may be caused by various chemicals, including free radicals (molecules that are highly reactive chemically) Cholesterol begins to deposit between the layers in the artery wall (after the lesion is created) Over a period of months, the deposits form a hard scar - irreversible. Artery does not adapt well to changes in blood pressure. Narrowed arteries cause deficiency of blood flow and therefore a lowered rate of oxygen and nutrients supplied.
