Document Summary

Located in the reticular formation of the medulla and lower third of the pons. Contains vasomotor and cardiac control centres (cardiovascular centre) Cvc transmits impulses to the heart through vagus nerve (slowing the heart rate) and spinal cord & peripheral sympathetic nerves (increasing the heart rate) Baro and chemoreceptors are essential for regulating the blood pressure. Baroreceptors are located in the blood vessel walls and are pressure sensitive. Chemoreceptors are located in the carotid bodies and are chemical sensitive, detecting oxygen, co2 and hydrogen levels main function is to regulate ventilation. Renin: enzyme that is released by the kidneys in response to a decrease in bp or increase in sns activity. Renin converts angiotensinogen to angiotensin i and then angiotensin ii. Angiotensin ii is a vasoconstrictor, reduces sodium excretion, stimulates aldosterone secretion. Released in response to decrease in blood volume and pressure. Plays a permissive role in hypertension through its water retaining properties.
