Who estimates that mental disorders are among the leading causes of disability globally. And 20% of canadians have personally experienced a diagnosed a mental illness in their lifetime. Ie: mental illness can lead to suicide- among first nations communication, suicide rate is at least 2x as high as general population and among inuit it"s 6 to 11x higher than that of the general pop. Mental disorder is multiply determined- ie: contribute by physical env, genetics, biology, personality, culture, ses, and life events. Mental illnesses account for a large percentage of hospital stays every yr causing as many lost days at work as physical problems ie: cancer, heart attack or back pain. Mental health and mental disorder are measured on two separate continuums. Major detriment for persons with mental illness is the stigma and associated alientation and discrimination and inhibit them from seeking help and support in the community.
