Weekly objectives: identify the significance of mental health assessment and the components of mental health nurse assessment, significance of mental health assessment for canadians. 20% of canadians diagnosed with some form of mental illness. 1 in 3 face mental health problem during life. Internal emotional problems: external social group, development of values/self-knowledge/self-control/common sense, larger community, i. e. health care systems, employment, education, housing. Combination of many factors affects mental health status: large/social issues poverty, racism, discrimination. Immigrants/aboriginal canadians additional economic, social and cultural challenges. Barriers to resources increase rate of mental illness and suicide. In first nations, rate of suicide is double that of general population. In inuit 6-11 times higher than general population: reflects sdh problems, intergeneration/historical effects and continuous discrimination. Mental health: ability to fell, think, emotional expression and behave in order to enhance personal capabilities to deal with challenges but also enjoy life"s experiences.
