Document Summary

Self concept: an individual"s self beliefs and self evaluations (how people perceive themselves) Ideal self desired self (who do i want to be) Compare image of the job with our perceived self (ideal) Self-concept helps explain attitudes, motivation, decisions, & behaviors in the workplace. Number of distinct & important roles/ identities people perceive about themselves. All individuals have complexity because we all view ourselves in one or more role (student, friend, worker, husband, etc. ) Determined by the number of selves & separation of those selves. Example: bad student but good worker therefore bad grades won"t break person down. Low complexity individual"s most important identities interconnected- lower absenteeism & turnover. Example: when an individual is very work-related they view themselves as the income earner, manager, etc. This makes it hard to assume other roles completely. Perform better because of more invested skill development & commitment. How many distinct/ important roles/identities does a person think about t define him/herself: consistency.
