American family has changed more in the past 50 years than any other time period. 7 different living arrangements are married with 1+ child, married with 0 children, single parent with 1+ child, unmarried couple with 1+ child, gay/lesbian couple with children, same-sex couple without children, and unmarried couple with 0 children. Parents more likely to be out of the house, extended family less involved, therefore less adult guidance which can lead to mental health problems and other risk factors. Family life cycle: new family cycle begins with each new marriage, stages determined by age of oldest child with tasks to be completed before moving to the next. Unattached young adult: responsible habits, manage resources, secure employment. Established stage: marriage/partnership, break away from family of origin, roles. New parent (infant-3y): duties and roles change. Preschool (oldest 3-6y): apply effective parenting skills, teach positive interaction)
