PSYC 441 Chapter 9: General Framework for Understanding Attitude Change Processes
Document Summary
Cialdini et al. study: told college students they were soon going to discuss a campus issue with another student with a position opposite to their own. (never actually exposed to the persuasive message): 2 conditions personally relevant (dividing campuses next year) and no personal relevance (dividing campuses in 6 years) Results: high consequence condition (presented with inaccurate information) (cid:224) both genders defended their personal positions on topics they were familiar with (males football, females fashion), but were more likely to agree with inaccurate information on topics they were unfamiliar with (males fashion, females football, low consequence condition (accurate information) (cid:224) no need to defend one"s view. Females agree more with opinions of others on both topics (socialized towards cooperation) while males agreed less with the opinions of others on both topics (socialized towards independence): overall: high consequence = processing of issue relevant information; low consequence = processing of non issue relevant info (ie. social roles)
