BIOL 321 Chapter Notes - Chapter 17: Shyness, Game Theory, Trait Theory
Document Summary
Personality traits may be heritable as well as be affected by individual learning and social learning especially when learning occurs early in development & has long term affects. Boldness refers to the tendency to take risks in familiar and unfamiliar situations. Trapped fish were less likely than seined fish to flee from human observers as might be expected from bolder fish. In ponds trapped fish were more likely to forage away from other fish and their diet contained 3 times as many copepods. Trapped and seined fish differed in term of the parasites they carried suggesting different habitat use based on personality types. No differences between trapped and seined fish with respect to age and sex. Trapped fish acclimated to feeding in the lab more quickly than did seined fish as trapped fish might be more bold. Bold/inhibited habitat continuum exists in pumpkinseeds in nature and that where individuals fall along the continuum.
