Document Summary
Phenotype: an individual"s directly observable physical and behavioural characteristics, which are determined by both genetic and environmental factors. Chromosomes: rodlike structures in the cell nucleus that store and transmit genetic information; we have 23 matching pairs (with the exception of xy in males)/46 individual chromosomes, one from the mother and one from the father in each pair. Deoxyribonucleic acid (dna): long, double-stranded molecules that looks like a twisted ladder; makes up chromosomes. Gene: a segment of dna along the length of the chromosome (we have approx. Mitosis: the process of cell duplication, in which each new cell receives an exact copy of the original chromosomes. Gametes: sex cells, sperm and ova, which contain half as many chromosomes as regular body cells (23 unpaired). Meiosis: the process of cell division through which gametes are formed and in which the number of chromosomes in each cell is halved.
